Disabled individuals experience discrimination in various societal settings. Some of those are easily visible, but others are more hidden. The University of Iceland hosted the annual equality days earlier this month, but the purpose and goal of them is to create open discourse and increased understanding of equality and to increase the visibility of equality issues. This year, Dr. Liat Ben-Moshe, assistant professor at Toledo University in the U.S., was the featured guest speaker. She gave two presentation about different types of discrimination against disabled individuals – on the one hand, within the academic community, and on the other hand, within the legal system. Kjartan sat down with Liat and Rannveig Traustadottir, professor at the University of Iceland and the Director of the Research Center of Disability Studies, to discuss how discrimination impacts the lives of disabled individuals and the endurance of those individuals in fighting for a more inclusive society.
