International migration is one of the most contentious issues in western societies, and policy makers struggle to construct policies on this topic. Public opinion is not always on the side of migrants, while labour markets demand a steady supply of labour. Icelandic authorities face the same set of policy dilemmas as other western nation states, and many questions remain unanswered. In order to shed light on this issue, the Mobilities and Transnational Iceland project organised the keynote event of the Þjóðarspegill conference last week. The keynote speaker was Hein de Haas, professor of sociology at the University of Amsterdam and a leading migration scholar worldwide. In this episode, he talks to Kjartan about the myths and facts of international migration.
